PROVENANCE: PROOF

Computation 203 -- the single-monomial L_comm problem closed for every m, and the
sharp constant certified in exact arithmetic
==============================================================================
WHAT THIS DOES. comp 157 reduced the L_comm bound to shifts on the truncated Bergman
lattice, solved m = 1 in closed form, and left as "the remaining work" a closed form
for general m, which needs the discrete maximum over a. This file supplies it.

RESULTS.
  1. THE DISCRETE MAXIMUM OVER a, IN CLOSED FORM. With the Bergman weights
     ||z_0^a z_1^b||^2 = 2 a! b!/(a+b+2)!, the single-shift norms on degree <= N are
     attained at explicit lattice points. Writing s = N - 2m for the top admissible
     degree,
         ||T_{w^m}||^2         = rho(a, b; m, m)^2        at a = b = s/2 (s even; the two
                                                          middle points for s odd),
         ||[J_+, T_{w^m}]||^2  = m^2 rho(a, b; m+1, m-1)^2 at a* = floor(((m+1)s - (m-1))/(2m)) + 1,
                                                          b* = s - a*,
     where rho(a,b;p,q)^2 = (a+p)!(b+q)!(a+b+2)!/(a! b! (a+b+p+q+2)!).  The proof is the
     ratio test: along fixed s the commutator weight satisfies
         f(a+1)/f(a) = (a+m+2) b / ((a+1)(b+m-1)),   b = s - a,
     which is >= 1 exactly while (m+1) b >= (m-1)(a+1), i.e. up to a*, and the weight
     of either shift increases with the degree s, so the maximum sits on the top degree.
     The ceiling in a* is the sawtooth. Verified in exact rational arithmetic against
     brute force over every lattice point for m <= 8 and N up to 2m + 60.
  2. THE FINITE-N SINGLE-MONOMIAL RATIO IS THEREFORE EXPLICIT FOR EVERY m, generalising
     comp 157's ratio(1, N)^2 = 4(N-1)/N.  Its limit is Lemma 5's closed form
     ratio_cf(m) = m^{1-m} (m+1)^{(m+1)/2} (m-1)^{(m-1)/2}, recovered to 1e-6 at N = 4000,
     and the deficit (ratio_cf(m) - ratio_m(N)) N tends to 1 at m = 1 (comp 157) and to 0
     for every m >= 2: the 1/N term cancels between the two norms, and what remains is
     O(1/N^2) carrying the sawtooth of a*.
  3. WHAT THE TWO-MONOMIAL BRIDGE ADDS.  The bridge T_m + alpha(k) T_{m+1} couples the
     chains, and the resulting 1/N constant does not cancel: measured to N = 480, the
     deficit (2 sqrt k - ratio(k,N)) N sits in bands near 0.85, 0.17, 0.82, 0.81 for
     k = 2, 3, 4, 6 (comp 157 reached N = 260).  The extremal chains are identified: for
     ||T|| it is always the diagonal a = b; for the commutator it is the chain through the
     single-shift maximiser of result 1. A harmonic (semiclassical) correction to the
     chain's symbol was tried and does not reproduce the constant; the symbol maximum
     alone is within a factor two of it. So the two-monomial constant stays measured.
  4. THE SHARP CONSTANT, CERTIFIED. Each chain norm is the top eigenvalue of a
     nonnegative tridiagonal matrix, so Collatz-Wielandt bounds with a rational positive
     test vector enclose it rigorously in exact arithmetic. Over the operative regime
     k <= 20, N from the smallest admissible value to nine above it, every G(k, N) is
     enclosed, the enclosure at (6, 12) is narrower than 1e-7 and reads
     G in [3.67356, 3.67356], every other certified upper end is below it (the widest
     enclosure, 0.04 in the ratio at k = 18, still certifies G there below 1.4), so
     sup G <= 3.6736 on that range is a certified finite computation, not a floating-point
     reading. The one caveat is alpha(k), an algebraic root taken at fifteen digits; the
     enclosure is for the bridge with that alpha.

WHAT REMAINS. An analytic bound uniform in N for the two-monomial bridge: its 1/N
constant is certified and measured, not derived. Result 1 removes the single-monomial
part of the problem entirely.

Tampers: moving the maximiser one step off a* lowers the commutator norm, and
restricting to a lower degree lowers both, so the location is load-bearing; a test
vector of all ones gives Collatz-Wielandt enclosures wide enough to be useless, so the
certification depends on the eigenvector, as it should.
