PROVENANCE: PROOF

Computation 166, the interaction vertex: forced by gauge covariance, and the third
"absent outright" that was not
====================================================================================
comp 165 closed by naming the interaction vertex as the one ingredient of the
photoelectric effect PST does not supply, and put the tally at four of five. That is
wrong, and it is wrong in the same way twice before it: the countable-quanta claim at
v32.38 and the photoelectric claim at v32.44. **Three times in one line of work a
statement about what is missing was written without opening the chapter that has it.**

WHAT THE BOOK ALREADY HAS
--------------------------
\\S sec:gauge derives the photon as the connection of a U(1) whose existence is itself
derived, and says in as many words: "minimal coupling of charged fields to A_mu via
D_mu follows from gauge covariance of the projected kinetic terms. The gauging is not
an additional postulate." The Dirac operator on the spinor bundle comes from the
projected metric (\\S sec:gauge-sm). Minimal coupling of that operator to that
connection IS the vertex. So the FORM of the vertex is derived; what is scoped rather
than absent is its STRENGTH.

WHAT THIS COMPUTATION ADDS, since "follows from gauge covariance" is an assertion
until someone does the algebra
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  1. THE VARIATION, EXACTLY. Under a local phase rotation psi -> e^{i alpha(x)} psi
the free Dirac Lagrangian changes by exactly

          delta L = - (psibar gamma^mu psi) d_mu alpha

which is the VECTOR current contracted with the gradient, and nothing else.
Computed with explicit Dirac matrices and a completely general spinor.

  2. SO THE COUNTERTERM IS FORCED. Only a term built on the same vector current can
cancel that, and -e (psibar gamma^mu psi) A_mu does it exactly, provided
A_mu -> A_mu - (1/e) d_mu alpha. The transformation law is an output here, not
an input: it is whatever makes the cancellation work, and it is unique.

  3. THE AXIAL ALTERNATIVE FAILS TWICE, and both failures are computed. The other
      dimension-four candidate, -e (psibar gamma^mu gamma^5 psi) A_mu, cannot cancel
delta L at all, because delta L carries the vector current. And its current is
      not conserved: on shell d_mu (psibar gamma^mu gamma^5 psi) = 2 i m psibar
gamma^5 psi, verified against the explicit spinor, whereas the vector current
      gives exactly zero.

  4. AND CONSERVATION IS NOT OPTIONAL. d_mu d_nu F^{mu nu} vanishes identically by
      antisymmetry, so Maxwell's equation d_mu F^{mu nu} = e j^nu can only be sourced
by a conserved current. The vector current qualifies and the axial one does
not. Checked on random antisymmetric tensors.

WHAT IS SCOPED RATHER THAN ABSENT
-----------------------------------
The strength. \\S sec:gauge gives e^{-2} proportional to r_0^2 from the Maxwell term
\\eqref{eq:maxwell}, and \\S sec:Z2-status gives Z^2 = e^{-1} derived modulo the
emergence premise plus the renormalisation-group test at 0.8%. So alpha is not a free
parameter here, but nor is it parameter-free, and any cross-section computed from this
vertex inherits that scope exactly.

SO THE REVISED TALLY IS FIVE OF FIVE, ONE OF THEM SCOPED, and what is genuinely left
is not an ingredient at all: it is the application, computing a cross-section, which
is ordinary quantum electrodynamics once the form and the strength are in hand.

A "pass": the variation equal to minus the vector current contracted with the
gradient; the counterterm cancelling it exactly under the derived transformation law;
the axial current's divergence equal to 2 i m psibar gamma^5 psi while the vector
current's is exactly zero; and the double divergence of any antisymmetric tensor
vanishing.

WHAT THIS DOES NOT DO
---------------------
It does not make alpha parameter-free, and it does not compute a photoelectric
cross-section. It settles what kind of thing is missing: not a piece of structure but
a calculation, and the calculation's precision is set by \\S sec:Z2-status.
